Health and Safety
School staff are fully aware of their responsibilities in respect of health and safety of pupils. It is expected that pupils will behave responsibly and comply with all safety requirements. The support of parents in promoting good practice in health and safety matters is very important.
Fire drills are held at frequent intervals so that your child becomes familiar with the procedure for speedily evacuating the buildings in a controlled and orderly manner.
When pupils are at school the responsibility for their safety rests with the Authority and the head teacher and staff undertake this responsibility on behalf of the authority. This means that reasonable steps should be taken at all times to prevent any pupil suffering injury and to ensure that accidents or difficulties can be reported to a responsible adult and appropriate action taken.
Minor accidents during the school day are dealt with in the Care Room where children receive first aid. After appropriate action has been taken the child receives a short note to take home which informs parents that they have been in the Care Room and received treatment. Any injury to the head or other serious injury would result in parents being contacted immediately and school staff would either meet parents at the
Care Room
The care and welfare of all pupils at James Gillespie’s is of prime concern to all our staff and we will ensure that all children are looked after until a parent arrives if they are ill or injured.
Medication in School
If children need to be given medication at school, parents must complete Form 6 which is available from our school office. The medicine must be in date and in the original container. Please note that no medication will be administered without completion of this form.
Playground Supervision

Pupils are under constant supervision both inside and outside school. In the building they are with class teachers and other staff members and in the playground learning assistants and playground supervisors support pupils. One learning assistant is always available in the Care Room over breaks whilst others supervise the different play areas in the playground. Learning assistants help support play activities as well as ensuring children’s safety.
